The Matches between Hongkong, Yokohama and Shanghai.
These matches have now been concluded, but the details of the shooting are so volun ruinous that we do not give them in full contenting ourselves with registering those scores which have boon selected as the best of each competitor.
'Yokohama did not accept the challenge to the second match, that with Militar Rifles, as their team' do not possess such weapons, and the time allowed was too short for them to procure and go into practice with them, compare rather poorly with those. made Phe scores made by the Hongkong team
by Shanghai; but some allowance has to be made for the inferiority of their weapons, Messrs. Woodin and Bernhard having with Sniders, and the other four with Swiss Military Rifles. They have another chanco to improve these the scores, but it seems likely that this, like the "Any Rifle Match," will go to the team possessing the best weapons. The scores are Mr. ©. W. Hongkong and Yokohama, and as will be seen the former port wins by avery narrow majority, As was anticipated, Shanghai stood no' chance whatever in this contest, partly from the unfavourable nature of Our Rifle-Range, but chiefly from the want of good Match Rifles. Virtually, Shanghai has competed with Military against Match Rifles, Private Glass' "Metford" being theoonly rifle in the team which was provided with match-sights and wind-gauge, It is fair to point out that Bois and Wyatt shot on a day's notice, in order to finish the match, two of the men being sick, and as they had only Military Rifles, their Scores are very creditable.
The Umpire for Hongkong and Yoko-fama was the T, Church, Esq.: For Shanghai Lieut, Sim, Before another challenge is accepted for such a contest, we hope to see some more general interest taken in shooting with fine Rifles. This can only be done by some revival of the Rifle Club, for so long as no competitions here are open to Any Rifle, men will not get expensive match Rifles costing from is, 100 to 150, but will prefer to practice with the Hen fartini's of the 8.V.C., which have ce nly proved themusolves sirer-rate weapons of their class. each Range. Maximum Poss. Score 1,200.
