ANODER OF THE REY

STONENOUSE

dastardly as well xs darin deed was ited by an armed band about 40 S.W. of Peking two days ago. "The James Stonchouse of the Jondon Missio ing a tour in the Tungan wats Kuan districts and whiJo crossing fired upon by a number of armed tid to be robbers, but more likely Boxers on raid. 'The' wounds proved fatal and shortly afterwards My. Stone-house died. On_ the following day Dr. MacFarline of Tientsin, accompanied by a body of troops from' Yangtstm under Capt. Rose, recovered the body, which was brought to Peking last night, The funeral will take place to-morrow.

This renewed atrocity on the life of an uglishman, perpetrated so near Peking, while the troops are still in possession of the city, effectually disposes of the oft-repeated assertion that the Powers have meted out merciless punishment to those responsible for the recent riots. That outcry against the cruelty of the Allies is refuted by the attitude and acts of the Chinese. So far from acting too severely, the troops have exercised so much leniency as to give to the Chinese the impression that Boxerism cannot be stamped out. A reed shows how the wind is blowing and this outrage had significance in showing how little the Chinese regard the issue of proclamations or the punishment of a few leading Boxers. It also clearly shows the necessity for some efficient control in the whole Province of Chihli. Kither the ordinary Chinese officials ought to be recognised and sap-ported in their authority or some. satis. factory military government established instead. Meantime there is decided unrest and from every quarter come reports of raids and robbers, 26th March.
