The White Feather Brigade

Numerous are the suggestions made for righting the wrong. Conscription is, naturally, the favourite remedy; but short of this all sorts of devices are proposed for bringing the backward young men to sense of their duty. One, whi has already been put into practice at one or two seaside places, is the formation of "white feather" societies, composed of Ikdies who stow this badge of distinction upon every able-bodied man of soldierly age whom they see indulging in holiday amusements.

It is declared that at one place very few of the young men appeared to understand the significance of the gift. They accepted] the feather as a welcome attention, and it was only when the Town Crier went round and explained the symbolism that they realized how they had been shamed.
