We have received a copy of "Current Racing Form at Shanghai and /Kiangwan, 1924," compiled by "H. E. K." and sold by Messrs. Kell Jand Walsh. A careful study of the book convinces us that the compiler has succeeded admirably in his Jobject—to. supply those interested jin local racing with a quick and ready reference to the present form lof competing ponies," and that it is 8 good investment for those to whom that abstract quality "form" means something more than a vag generality. In the preface to book are some absorbingly me teresting remarks on the subject of handicapping and in bringing the good ponies and the poor ones more jon an equity by adding weight estimated through collateral performances. In this connexion, the Jcompiler considers that an analysis lof China racing indicates the necessity of a much' wider range of handicap, and points out in support Jof his contention that the common range of handicap in English raging indicates a possible difference of as much as 55 Ib, whereas in China racing an attempt. is made to" bring "ponies together with a range of about 28 Ib. Not the least interesting and important part of the work is the [Comparative. Table at the end, Jwhich is stated to be an attempt to express the performances of all ponies during 1924 in a comparative table. This table is purely a paper Hhandieap which, as the compiler appolitely remarks, "often proves the most: reliable guide." The book shows evidence of much expert skill
