Suppression of Newspapers

September 1.

Mention was recently made about the suppression of the "Tung Pao" or "Enlightened Journal" of Mukden by the Manchu Government on account of the publication of a series of articles concerning the highhandedness of the Japanese authorities in Fengtien after the defeat of the Russians in 1905 and also its cartoons ridiculing the Chinese officials, addition to this short-lived "Tung Pao," the President of the Minchénpe freed he Ching Pao" or " Peking or Ministry of the Interior, has sup-jews" (not the old Peking Gazette") in connexion with the recent tion of the Grand Secretary and Councillor of State, Hsii Hung-hsi, who, it will be remembered, was ordered to vacate his posts and return to his native home in Hunan " couple of months ago on the charge of having made public affairs of State.

This short-lived Peking News" was' only established in March last with Mr. Wang as proprietor and editor. As Mr. Wang is a clever Chinese scholar and journalist, his peper soon took leading place among the native journals in North-China for its readiness and accuracy in getting important State news. This is one of the real causes which led to its suppression by the Manchu Government which is endeavouring to prevent the leakage of State secrets.
