Tigers Come Back

Detroit, Oct. 3.

With the same power that took them to the top of the: American League atter a slow start, the Detroit Tigers came back strongly to-day to. take the second game.of the 1985 World Series from the Chicago Cubs, by the Last Wednesday Mr. H. H. Read, celebrated his 72nd birthday, and received the congratulations of many friends. Tt was only a few days ago September 23, to be precise—that he received congratulations on reaching a still mre remarkable Janniversary, the completion of 50 years of active membership of the Shanghai Race Club.

In face of these dates, the mere matier of 38 years and 11 months appears comparatively recent, of Shanghai's ephemeral publications, of the date of November, 1896, does not appear out of date; speaking of Mr. H. H. Read (and publishing the cartoon shown above) the magazine states:

As a sportsman he loves horseflesh of every description for its own sake, on the fat, across entry, and In harness: as, rider, he combines a very pretty style w! great coolness and "saver." To see him handling a refractory griffin is a 00d object lesson on the advantages fof the "suaviter in mode" method; from his performances on race-day3 those who "mark Read, and learn," do wisely. The absence of all effort about his riding, even in a close finish, is remarkable, and there is an artistic easiness about his seat that fs extremely aesthetic and, at th same time, effective. His chiot suc cesses have been with "Home Guard, Mississippi, Bovril" and his own ponies "Nalrmont" and "Tocsin"; up now, however, he has not had fair share of racing luck (with the exception of one famous meeting in Hankow), for nether the "Griffins, Leger or Champions have seen him first past the post In these and other Their score was 49 all out. Although the Tyros only missed this position by a mere two runs, Elliott and Booth of the Ramblers reduced them Peiping, Oct. 1.
