Azlington,' who is one of our most distinguished. authors arrived in the same year but two months later, and lethers who closely followed in their footsteps are Dr. Hopkins, the Rev. E. E. Alken and Dr. J. C. Ferguson. JO distinguished guest of honour, 100, [was Mrs: Calhoun, without whom no party in Peiping is complete anid who during her many years in China has Jendeared herself to the entire foreign lend Chinese communities by her most. gracious hospitality and friendship, Unofficial Entertaining Since the death of His Majesty King George there have not been Jmany official entertainments but there always a good deal of ontertain~ ing going on." The other evening the [Special Commissionar for Foreign Affairs and Mrs. S. G. Cheng gave a Jdinner-party and among their quests Were Mr, and Mrs, Merrill, our latest bride and groom (he is First Secre-ary at the American Embassy) Gen-feral and Madame Dan Pao Tehao, Mrs. Club, whose husband is at present away with the American Ambussader, Colonel Bixey, Mrs. Chase, Mrs. Hussey, Mr. and Mrs, Faulkner, Mr. and Mrs, Danby, Mr, A. 'This -matriage took place a few weeks ago but was only announced: last week. 'The bride is Signorina Elena Benamozegh who is expected to arrive in Pel-ping at the end of March, and she will be a valuable. addition to' the allan community which is all too small, Mme Dan Dances 'A most enjoyable dance recital was niven by Madame Dan Pao Tehao on February 27 under the auspices the Insiitute of Fine. Arts. Madame Dan is, of course, one of the two famous sisters who, on their return from France where their father was Chinese Minister, became ladies-in-[waiting to the oid Empress-Dowager and Initiated her into many foreign ways and customs. The other sister the author of and who recently paid a visit to China, Madame Dan not only danced most gracefully but had herself composed the dances. She wore many beautiful costumes, notably the one in the "Manchu Court Dance" which was heavily embroldered red brocade with an enormous and picturesque Manchu headdress, was very interesting to hear the music which had been composed over 1 thousand years ago by the ci rated Emperor Ming Huang of the Tang Dynasty and Madame Dan sang {the words as she swayed and postured in the "Rainbow Garment "Dance," So as not to have too much of a good thing, variety was Introduced by the dances of Madame Kubasova-Soboleft They were the "Swan Dance" and the "Pelking Dust" Dance in the for~ eign ballet style, the latter being particularly: charming and original. Miss Olga Barbier, a pupil of Madame Kubasova, did a pretty Gavotte and in the opening number Madame Dat was assisted by the Misses Stilwel the daughters of the American Milltary Attache, and Miss Barbier "Tang Dynasty" statuettes; The young girls looks really beautiful. Altogether a most pleasant evening's entertainment for which many dinners were given. I noticed in. the audience Frau Trautman, the Portuieuese Minister and Madame Navarro, Mr. and Mrs, Lockhart, Baron Leo: pold Plessen, Countess Lichowsky (he daughter' of the late German Ambassador Prince - Lichnowsky) Madame 'Munthe and many' distinguished Chinese friends of Madame Den including the Mayor, General Sung Cheh-yuan, General Chin Teh-chun and Dr, and Mrs. 8. G. Cheng, Interesting Exhibitions Mrs, Gladys Lynch, the wife of the [Commanding Offieer'of the 15th Infantry in Tientsin held an exhibition Jot pictures at the Institute of Fine Arts ten days ago, She is a much travelled person as her pictures showed, they being of America, Hawaii, China and the Filippines besides other places. Another most interesting ex= hibition was the one held. by Miss Punnett of old Japanese wood-cuts. Miss Punnett has made a study of these and gave a little talk on the jepening day to the members of the Institute of Fine Arts, 'Still another exhibition was that of Mr. Godfrey Grantham the son of the late Sir E, Granthamn and Madame /Munthe, who' writes under the pen-name of A. E, Grantham. This young, artist has lived In Peiping for most for his life, though he has made fre~ quent trips {0 Europe where studied in Germany under Professor Bartning,—the famous artist and teacher. He has a great liking for flowers as so many of his pictures testify and is really ut iis best them, Peiping's Usual Visitors There are, as usual, many visitors in Peiping.
