OF PASSENGER

Attempt to Get More Money Foiled by Foreigners

Two foreign women were able to save a Chinese woman and her two children from an awkward predicament yesterday at about 10 am. at the corner of Nanking and Honan Roads. The Chinese woman and her children—one a babe in arms and the other a little boy of between two and three years—had got out of a rickshaw near the corner and had paid off the rickshaw puller. The mother then turned to go into a shop on the corner, but the puller, apparently dissatisfied with his fare, seized her little boy by the arm and refused to let him go until he was paid considerably more.

The distracted, mother could do nothíng, her arms being full with the other infant, and had to stand by until the terrified little boy's screams attracted the attention of two foreign women who were looking into a shop window close by. These two women immediately went to the rescue and, by striking the puller's wrists, forced him to loose his hold of the child, who ran to his mother and thence into the safety of the shop.

The whole scene was witnessed by a number of people on the top of a No. bus which was held up at the intersection by the traffic signals. They had probably a better view of the incident than those on the ground level. Several of the passengers on the bus made a move to go to the rescue of the Chinese family, but they might have been wild in a cage for all the hope they had of getting out of the vehicle.

This was probably fortunate for the rickshaw puller.
