Council Supported

To the Editor of the *Norru-Cuia Dany News"

Sm—The attitude adopted in some articles and letters which have appeared anonymously in the press cannot but convince all moderate min fed people that the Council has made out a gord case for the new traffic regulations. One newspaper which has for some years declared that there is a0 traffic problem now quotes the recommendation of the Traffic Commission of 1926 in order to show that if these recommendations had been put into effect there would be no rattle problem to-day.

The Automobile Association has slated that if its recommendations: made in 1928 had been carried out the present situation would not have arisen, Either there is a traffic problem or there is not, but they cannot have it both ways, and one thing is cer~ tain, namely, that the recommenda tions of the 1926 Traftie Commission were far more drastic than anything the Council has so far proposed dong.

One correspondent has pointed out that these regulations will have adverse effect on property and shops {in the Central District, but has en-lirely ignored the fact that many shops have closed and others have been forced to vacate the Central District because of the inability of customers to shop in that district owing to the lack of temporary parking accommodation. Another correspondent has pointed out that professional men, owing to these regula-ons, will no' longer be able to have their offices in the Central District Surely they do not have their offices there. because of the free parking facilities that they have had in the past but because were they not to do so their clients and patients would transfer their patronage to other professional men whose offices were more conveniently located.

The articles and letters 1 driven car, fail to point out that since the postponement of the reulations accommodation has been provided for a further 116 cars on the Bund, Shanghai, Sept. 1
