COOL THOUGHTS

The hot weather which Shanghai is managing to survive with varying degrees of discomfort raises many problems. Most of them fare based on the ordinary comforts of life and include the important questions of what to eat, what to drink and what to wear.

Of course, it is perfectly simple to decide what to do to pass through the days when it looks as if Shanghai had been selected for punishments based on standards as it the city's sins, alas, were catching up with the proper compensating adjustment which Emerson claims inevitably applies to all human Jalso connected with the bathtub. Inside the cottages are built big Jstoves which are, in reality, like rooms, parts of the house. Stones are heated to a high temperature jand then water is poured on them produce a steam vapour in which the men of the house bathe, revelling in the vapour and assist-jing the bath by massaging themselves with twigs which helps to maintain the circulation and create that glow which is the envy of every healthy person. Having pro-Jduced a high state of warmth and [perspiration they then open the idoer and dash out naked into the snow, rolling in it in sheer delight Jat a temperature well below zero, Jand spend some considerable time ffrolticking like sand larks and rubbing the snow into their bodies flying 200 miles he encountered one of the hot Chinook winds blowing down from the mountains, these winds, strange to say, blowing }from the Rocky Mountains being hot in winter and cool in summer. This wind was so hot that it melted the grease on the aeroplane and the engine seized up compelling him to descend. He landed and was land~ bound for four days waiting until ithe weather grew cold enough to coagulate the grease and enable him to take off again when he landed at his destination where the temperature was 20 degrees below zero suffering minor damage in landing. This occurred over a distance of 500 miles on a regular airmail route.
