There is something inspiring in the story of the Baer-Braddock ght because of the gallantry with which the victor has struggled against severe odds in the fight to the heavyweight championship. A year ago Braddock was a poverty stricken pugilist with, apparently, his career behind him. He was destitute and his wife and two children were the recipients of New Jersey State relief. Braddock slaged a most unexpected come-back and earned his right to challenge Baer by his successful fight in the heavyweight elimination contest when he conclusively out fought Lasky in a surprising upset. Camera refused to meet Braddock who thereupon was named the first challenger by the New York State Boxing Commission, Baer was not anxious to meet the challenger from a monetary point of view, because he thought Braddock would not be a sufficient attraction, but also because he knew that Braddock was a clever fighter with a heavy punch. The match was eventually arranged and throughout the training Baer's chances of retaining the title appeared 50 good as to be very convincingly indicated in the betting. How far Baer's defeat may be attributed to his mode of lite will always be open to question, though it is alleged that between Ddouts of training hig living was not se Spartan as the dictates of complete fitness are held to demand. The Gescription of the fight published elsewhere indicates that Braddock 8 the real aggressor throughout and Captured most of the rounds, He succeeded in staging a remarkable come-back, but whether he will be able to hold the title very long still remains to be seen.
