Hongkong's beauty is one of the attractive qualities of which Shanghai is constrained to be envious in vain. Whatever may be done with Nanking Road by night, however lovingly Mr. Kerr may exploit the wonders of his art in Jessfield Park's Pleasant shades, and however Kallantly nostalgia invests the Bund river-front with the glamour of London Pool or Brooklyn Harbour, Shanghai has to admit that plainness ig the cross which it must although it no doubt takes special care to cultivate the virtues all the more assiduously because personal charm is denied to it. Now Hong-Kong's beauty has been enhanced by the unveiling of the new premises of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation. The ceremony was performed by the head of Hongkong's Administration and as the Ro:
Academy has already set the seal of its approval on the Architects" plans, building wilt fitly grace the Island's already well-defined splendour. It remains to hope that the physical elegance of the Bank's new surroundings will assist it in steering the depressed trade of China into waters as smooth and entrancing as the harbour over which it is privileged to look.
