The East Surreys won the toss and decided to take advantage of a boisterous; wind and the sun at their backs. From the kick-off the soldiers attacked, and remained in the vicinity of the S.F.X. penalty area until a big kick by Borodin cleared the situation. and began an attack by S.F.X. which proved abortive after a good centre by Kapustin was intercepted by Harrison, who headed up the field.
The Surreys again attacked, and, following a perfect shot by Friday being deflected by Schultz, a corner was given. The kick was well taken by Parr, and headed into the goal Where Kalbert gathered it and punted it upfield to where Hale was standing unmarked. This player sent in a long dropping shot, which Kabbert jumped for, but failed to reach, the bali entering the net over his outstretched arms.
This was a good goal, and the soldiers were indeed worthy of the lead. As a matter of fact, at this period, it was a continual duel between the East Surreys forwards and the SFX. defence, with an occasional thrill supplied by the first time shooting of the Surreys' half-backs, who were always in attendance. It seemed, however, that the shooting prowess of the centre-half was influencing the inside forwards, for they often, when in apparently good positions for having shots at goal, preferred to pass it back to him, which proved a faulty policy With such a good goalkeeper as Kabbert on one of his best days.
