Washington, Dec. 7. Statistics released by the Navy Department here today revealed that the United States had the most antiquated navy of any of the great sea Powers.
Official figures as of June 30, 1938, showed that Great Britain had 195 modern, first-line fighting craft, Japan had 178, France had 172, Italy had 199, the U.S.S.R. had 142, the United States had 106, and Germany had 80.
The United States ranked second in total tonnage figures, coming next behind Great Britain. However, more than half of the United States Navy's tonnage represented battleships of which seven are already over age, with the remaining eight due to be outmoded within a few years.
