Story of Dalai Lama

A strangely interesting story of the finding of the new Dalai Lama, or rather the reincarnation of the former one, is told by "The Times" Delhi correspondent, At the time of his birth, a rainbow shone over the house. As he began to grow his parents saw that he was an exceptional child, but not wishing to lose him, they did not put him forward as a candidate when Kyitsang Trulku, from Lhasa, came io search the district.

Nevertheless the late Panchen Lama heard about the boy and sent to tell Kyitsang Trulku about him. The lotte" accompanied by two monks, all three disguised as trad went'to the house. They immediately identified it with the house which the Regent had seen in his vision of the birthplace of the Dnlai The child, too, at once identified "the supposed traders as lamas, and stretching out his hand seized a rosary which had belonged to the Dalai and began to tell the beads.

"The Times" correspondent continues Kyitsang Trulku reported these things to the Regent and asked whether he should make a test of the child. The Regent consulted the National Assembly and sent with a party of officials some things which had belonged to the late Dalai Lama—a rosary, a small drum and a walking stick. Along with thes: were sent exact copies of the things.

When all these were shown to the child he chose without hesitation what had been his own in his former incarnation, He also said that an attempt was made to test another child who had taken hold of the Tashi Lama's rosary when the Lama was given a public blessing at Kumbum. But the child, for whom great claims had been made by his parents. would not come near the things which had belonged to the Dalai Lama when they were shown to him and went away weeping.
