Ju Memory of an Ambassador

CONSTITUTING one of the most impressive gestures in recent years, by order of President Roosevelt, the ashes of Mr. Hirosi Saito, Japanese Ambassador to Washington, who died in the American capital, were returned to Japan on board the cruiser Astoria. Due honours to the memory of the late Ambassador were paid at Annapolis, Maryland, on the cruiser's departure and at Yokohama on the cruiser's arrival on April 17th.

Two nations united at the funeral service in Tokyo on April 18th, paying tribute to a man of whom it was said his " name will live in the annals of Japanese diplomacy as it will in the hearts of the American people."

The upper picture shows the scene at Annapolis, as American sailors carried the shrine' on board the Astoria. Below is seen the funeral procession at Yokohama proceeding from the harbour, with the Astoria in the background. Floral tributes from President Roosevelt were landed with the shrine.
