Financial proposals, Conservatives say in private conversations, may be made to Reichsfuehter Adolf Hitler with a view to the transformation of Germany's war industry into a peace industry German currency could be re-established on a normal and free basis and the Reich could be furnished with raw materials, which engage in next to complete disarmament and that she should not again declare herself to belong to the "have not" nations of the world.
It Germany refuses such offers, Conservatives say, it will conclusively prove to the whole world that Herr Hitler understands but one argument—force. That he refuses conciliation.
While Conservatives continue to discuss this scheme, diplomatic quarters were cynical when asked for their opinions today. They attached no great importance to such a plan, describing it as being "too Simple." Herr Hitler, they pointed out, was interested only in political and not economical and financial problems.—Havas.
Peiping, July 19.
The Japanese army spokesman here was today slightly more explicit concerning the position of Lt,- Colonel C. R. Spear, British Military Attache, who is still being detained by the Japanese authorities at Kalgan. He denied the Tokyo report that the trial of the British officer had already started.
He recognized that Colonel Spear was a military attache and had a certain diplomatic standing, but, the spokesman asserted, the crux of the matter was whether he had exceeded his diplomatic duties and privileges, and the whole case revolved round that point.
He indicated that if it was found that Colonel Spear had done something against the Japanese army, it might be difficult to recognize his diplomatic standing.
The spokesman said he was not aware whether the trial would be public or private.
Asked if a British official would be invited to attend the trial, the spokesman replied that he hoped so. He added that he was in favour of foreigners attending the court-martial of Colonel Spear.—Reuter.
