HE unwavering loyalty of the population of the Netherlands India including Chinese, Arabs and Indians to Queen Wilhelmina was elaborately, demonstrated in May last year when news received that the mother country had been ruthlessly invaded, declared Mr. A. J. Hughes in a radio address on Friday over station XCDN on the reaction in the Netherlands India to the invasion.
Expressions of loyalty to the Queen by the entire population, he said, were spontaneous and Germans throughout the archipelago were rounded up, while seventeen out of eighteen German freighters who had sought sanctuary in the Dutch colony were immediately seized. The talk in part follows:
The reaction of the Colonial Government and people to this stagsering byt not unexpected blow was immediately evident though there was no sign of panic or bewilderment. Within an hour or so every German in Bandoeng was under detention including the Manager and two of the Staff of the hotel at which I was staying. Among those arrested were many well-known local business and professional men as well as many members of the notorious NSB. an organization comparatively small in numbers. the advocates of an utilitarian form of government and anathema to the vast, majority of the people of Holland. The full name of the organization is the National Socialistische Beweging or National Socialist Movement. leaving permanently were allowed to take 1,000 guilders. No securities or valuables were permitted to be taken out of the Colony. An important consideration in adopting these measures was to effectually prevent the flight of any German capital and securities.
German Properties Taken Over All German properties and investments were immediately taken over by the Government. The aggregate value of the various estates expropriated was estimated at between 40 to 50 million guilders, Buildings equipment and huge cargoes on hand belonging to big German enterprises such as Bayer & Ca., Carl Schlieper Ca. and others were estimated to have a value of as much or more
