Reflection of U.S. Life

Gershwin was an American and s music is nothing but a reflection of American life. Honegger had an incomprehensible passion for trains. he said, "they are living beings whom I love as others love women and horses." This is new to me and I am not more than passingly interested in it. Let Honegger bed his locomotive he so wishes, hut don't force me to witness the fusion of flesh and blood with, high pressure steam and steel rivets, A friend remarked during the interval "Make no mistake, Pacific 231 is a very clever piece of music, but how clever only a locomotive can apareciate." as work followed work came the realisation that Avshalomoffs mind is singularly one-tracked. All his works are exactly the seme, with the same monotonous mode of expression and the same insipid flavour. The piano concert was far too long and quite meaningless, Above zil why combine Oriental idioms with such an artificial form as the piano concerto? I understood from the programme that he was experimenting with Chinese idioms and with the blending of Chinese instruments with the Western orchestra. The impression from his music is that he once experimented with the Western orchestra and found it could imitate the music of this country which he so obviously loves and thet ever since he has continued with his first i spiration.

The orchestra had a field day. For who could say when they were right or wrong? The audience certainly could not distinguish between correct and incorrect notes. time or intonation. The honours of the day belong to Prof. Wei Chun; is excellent performance on the er-hu, which instrument is the richly toned ments and to Mr. surely worthy of better material—
