'A scheme is on foot for the formation of Rifle Company in Shanghai. In view of the present disorganized state of the Vo-Junteer Corps and the improbability ofts being revived as an eficiont military body until circumstances occur to demand its activity, it has boon determined by the Commandant and Oficors of the Corps to call small the arms and collect no further subscriptions, with the exception of those in arrear; in fact, without actual disbaudment, to allow the Corps to sink into a state of dormancy and to remain so until ita services are again required. This couno is doomed more desirable than utter dissolution, as it preserves the means of ro-suscitation at any future time, toa very great extent. But, in anier to obtain ways and means for keeping the arms and other property of the Corps in good condition, and at the sumo prevent all interest from being lost to the movement, itis proposed to form an association for the promotion of Rillo shooting; and it is thought that most of the motubers of the V. C. as well as many other gentlemen, will readily devote a little time ani attention to th acquirement of skill in 0 useful ay art, when it can be done without all the dry detail and fati rily be gone through under any military system. "Tt is with sincere regret that we notice the decline of the Volunteer Corp Dut all nest have lately scon that its fate Was inevitable, We believe the officers have done all in their power to keep up the movement in its integrity, but the main source of interost—the necessity for the force, has long since disappeared, Wo are convinced hiowover that, should emergency again arise, Volunteers will not be wanting.
