A cricket match between the H. 0. 0. and the Garrison was played on the 15th, and won by the Club. A scratch four-oar aco came off on the same afternoon between the Nereid, Ripple, and Kelpie, which came in the order named; the water was very lumpy. The Daily Press mentions a strange accident which happened to the steamer Poyang, when at Macao on Saturday last. The engineers, through some curious oversight, left a sea cock open during the night, and the consequence was the steamer sank, Fortunately she was in very shallow water, and was pumped out the next morning. The new steamer Sual, lately launched by Messrs. Inglis & Ca, has made a second satisfactory trip, and is now to be handed over to her owners, to commence running.

The China Mail draws attention to a Portuguese paper called O Catholico, published in the Colony, and which distinguiahes itself by pointing out the hor tors of the Protestant faith. ake the following, which describes the fate of the sons of a man educated by Protestants "The sons give themselves to the yoke of vice, and the father beneath decree tude and misery. falls sick, and the illness is severe, but his sons take no care of him. He lies at length in the most terrible despair, deserted ie wife and children, and as he despised during his life, 30 God humiliates him in death."

Yet the same paper would probably abuse the Chinese for publishing misstatements in the "Death Blow to Corrupt Doctrine."

The Hongkong, C. & M. Co.'s steamer Kinshan has been repaired and resumed running. No.4 of the China Review was published on the 15th. The Daily Press publishes the following case of torture:—" A Chinese girl of between 12 and 14 years of age, laid a complaint before the Hon. C. May, on the 13th, in which was detailed an incident of most revolting brutality. The girl's pocket mother, it appears, a fortnight ago, sent her out to make purchases, and on her return, some act of the girls led her to strip the unfortunate child naked, and impress all over her body red hot irons, in some places allowing the iron to sink deep in the flesh, She then locked the girl up in a room, where she was confined till yesterday morning, without any attempt made to heal up the wounds, or to supply her with proper food. On making her escape yesterday morning, she was directed by some other small girl how to act, and was led by her to the Acting Registrar-General, who, on hearing the revolting circumstances, ab once sent the girl up with Inspector King to the Hon. ©, May, and a warrant was immediately procured for the apprehension of the inhuman person whom she calls mother. At last accounts she had not been found, but we trust she will be caught, and receive her deserts,"
