On the 18th ult., the steamship Undine, arrived at Nagasaki from Formosa with a umber of sick soldiers.

One of the mum-bel an elficer, died daring the passage, the vessel came into port with her flying half-mast high. The Captain report things quiet when he left, and cannot tell whether any fighting is going on or not, as the officials don't seem inclined to inform Europeans on the subject. The Chinese are apparently satisfied with the state of affairs. Only one Chinese gunboat was there when the Undine left, Fish is ful, and also buffalo flesh, the latter scarcely fit for consumption.—The Sailioarrived from Formosa on the 15th, bringing a number of wounded and sick men,—7 wounded and 21 on the sick list. She also brought a Formosan girl, captured by the troops on their march through the mountains. The girl is apparently about eleven years of age, with deeply set eyes, one of which is blind. Her nose is fiat and cheekbones high, and her general appearance has a closer resemblance to the natives of the South Seas than to the Chinese. Her place of confinement has been the Custom House at Nagasaki, where she has been honored with visitors hailing from various climes, She was sent to Tékié in a Japanese steamer. She was kindly treated, and toys placed at her disposal, and she seemed apparently contented with the turn the wheel of fortune of war has taken in her young life, An old woman was also captured at the same time, but proved too slippery to hold, as she made a bolt of it and got clean away.

The Foochow Herald' of the 18th June says "HE, Shen Pao Chen has taken his de-

issue, H. E. is empowered by the Peking for Formosa. As mentioned in our Government to negotiate at the Japanese ing force, and if necessary to resort to arms in headquarters for the withdrawal of the invade order to expel the invaders. We are given to understand that a Jarge body of men—armed. with matchlocks, spears, and old muskets, are en route to Taiwan Fu. The superior discipline and armament of the Japanese are unquestionable, but their force is too small, we think, to ensure any solid victory in the event of their coming into collision with the Chinese troops."

The same paper of the 25th gives news from Takao vid Amoy to the 21st instant.

Chinese officials are endeavouring to form an alliance with the savages; mean: while the Japanese are doing their utmost to secure a firm footing on the island, and are employing half-castes to construct huts, &e.,, for their troops, The Japanese en~ campment is placarded with notices in cou spicuous Chinese characters, informing the people that they are on Japanese territory and inviting their friendship. The Mandarins are assuming a more hostile attitude, and threaten the invaders with condign punishment if they do not immediately Withdraw their force
