Stewards—Hon. F. F. Low

PEKING RACES — Brown, Esq., A. Lenzy, Esq., Comte de Rochechouart, C, Bismarck, ¥sq., W. G. — Sandford, Esq., J. L. Hammond, Esq

This race meeting was held on the 29th and 30th of April, on a new race course to the East of the city; the former one, which was situated to the west, being now unfit for any thing but boat racing.

For the meeting, the Capital appeared in reality to have donned its holiday attire; "all the world and his wife" was there, and the crowd who came to see the for: eigners amuse themselves could only be appreciated, by personal observation, It with racing justified the remark, that it was remarked by one whose. familirty was more like a Derby day than anything he had yet seen in the East, The course is called Mian-chia-ti, and is a little under a mile round. Unfortunately the corners in rounding (ifonemay use the expression) are desperate, and_are sufficient to throw any animal in a gallop out of its stride; notwithstanding this however, the time done was better' than in former years; and the general remark was that the best ponies in most instances won.

The grand stand was placed on the top of a high mound with sides sloping to the course; from this positi entire race could be viewed. The paddock was some 300 yards Veluw, and Use view from there" was most interesting. The sea of faces which rose tier above tier from the. course to the stand on three sides of the mound, and the concourse of Chinese that sui-rounded the entire course, and who, although there was nothing' to keep them back in the shape of ropes or pailing, behaved themselves in a most exemplary manner—was a grand sight. These Cele trols seemed enter into the spirit of the races, for. as the ponies rushed past ruck, Joud and long were the cheers rung out, and fortunate was he who was a last to pass in without recognition, ther was all that could be ard 1b, but more especially to the energetic Clerk of the Course, and the Hon. Sec., Messrs. Macleary Brown and Bullock, for the most able manner in which they performed their several duties The Races were visited or both days by the Foreign Ministers, as also. by those of the Tsung-li-Yamen,
