Few if any jiurickshas wore plying for hire on the sireers on Sunday, the proprietors of most of them having determined to strike against the increased license tax, and objecting very strongly to the strict inspection to which their vehicles have recently been subjected by the police. The jinrickshas are the property of some ten companies who have lately found thi the business has been very "wnremune being disappointed at the the resolution to at the number of license issued; they have deter Jusiness, at all events in the propriety ort that the of a large number of the coolies has n lately exceeded an average of 300 cash per which may be believed or not.

said also that the ce lies are demanding better terms from the owners, A yood many more than a thousand of the jinriekd, by the owners, to have bey recently objected to on inspection, upon grounds, and for faults, that they consider inadequate. It is quite possible that these statements of the proprietors are greatly exayyerated, and no one will regret if the result of thole present movement is to hand over the whole traffic to the Chinese on whose account an offer was made last to take up the whole of the jinticksha licenses at the present rate of S150 per month. A Correspondent writing' under the signature of Pedestrian makes the following comments on the well meaning but foolish offer of a Chinese gentleman in the matter of the native dogs that infest the Settlement, Another objection to the proposal of the member of the "Institue tion for Saving Oxen" is, that if the dogs were delivered to him there would be no security that they would be taken five, still \g8g @fty or sixty, [i from the Settlenent! Phe friend of oxen and of diseased and nad dogs may be, and doubtless is, an est man who would do what he promised. But his countrymen who run boats" on the river and creeks would probably unload their freight of canine rabies, actual or incipient, as soon after getting out of sight of Shanghai as the countrymen would permit them. Itwonld, of course, be impossible to send them by land. ' Thus Pedestrian:—Pray what aves this, would-be philanthropic El gentlemen say he wish the wretched half starved animals, lives he has suddenly become so anxious about? Provide food or shelter for those for whom no owners can be found, or try to make his countrymen more kind to them? Nothing of the sort, From the same superstitions fear of taking life which probably makes him a vegetarian, he wishes to prolong the wretched ce of a number of half-dead beasts, who, could weak, would only be too to be put an end to, and how does be propose to carry out his charitable homo? By sending "the animals a long distance" into the country to starve or become a pest to-the neighbourhood there. Very much akin is this sort of philanthropy to what one sometimes sees practised in the Native streets here, where mangy curs, scarcely able to crawl from weakness, are iched frou door to door by mere children, or, still more revolting, scalding water is thrown upon them by liwman fiends; but not a scrap of food given to them 32 funeral processions of unusual length and grandeur passed through the Settlement yesterday, one in the foronoon and the other in the afternoon, accompanied by the customary noise of gongs and other unmusical instruments, The professivual mourners, who were very felt the seurcity of them were conveyed chairs, but the ity had to walk, At the British Police Court on Monday, Michael Regan, a fireman Lolunging to the 3.3.
