The Veterans won the toss and with natural modesty took the inside course. Some difficulty was experienced in getting the boats away on even terms, but eventually what may fairly be termed the best start of the season was accomplished. For some distance both boats held well together. Before reaching the White Rails however the Vets commenced to put daylight between themselves and the youngsters but the latter on approaching the Garden on steam and drew slightly on the loaders, At the Boat-House the bow of the Griffins' boat just about lined the stern of the ancients' craft, and from this point to the finish a regular hammer-and-tongs struggleonsued. The Vetshowever improved their position. Both boats were steered well, and the light weights, although vanquished, deserve great credit for the plucky manner in which they made an exquisitely hot time of it for the Veterans, This being the first time the Veterans have acquired a victory-over Griffins for some years, there was consequently great rejoicing in the camp of the Philistincs.—Time, Veterans, 54d} 5 Griffins, 5.50.
