The Transit Pass Champion

Mr. John Andrew, who has in a small way achieved fame at Wuchou, returned to Hongkong on the 2nd inst.' He was, it seems, permitted to sell his cargo, or it was taken off his hands, but the question compensation for his long detention at Wuchou (about three months) owing to official obstruction, still remains to be settled. He brought no return cargo back to Canton, and returned in a native passage boat. The Wuchou authorities are backed up by the Viceroy, and the battle of the transit pass in Kuangtung has still to be fought. If the West River is opened to trade it will still be necessary to insist upon this privilege being freely utilised without obstruction.
