The New Chief Justice

Dr. Carrington took his seat on the Bench for the first time on the 18th inst.. when the Criminal Sessions were opened. The members of the legal profession were jall_ assembled, and the Attorney-General (Hon, W. AL Goodman) welcomed his lordship in a cordial speech, to which the Chief Justice made an appreciative reply. Mr. Goodman referred to. the last three distin: Phillippo, Sir James Russell, and Sir Fieldguished occupants of the post Sir Gear ing Clarke, and then delicately touched on the newcomers varied experience and great attainments asa guarantee for the successful administration of justice. Mr. Attorney lis right. Hongkong has been greatly favoured in her judicial heads, and Dr. Carrington is, I feel sure, destined to carry on the good traditions of the Bench here.
