The Martyrs Crown

To the Biitur of the Noxr#-Cuma Datty News, Sir,—There is nich good advice in the letters of *Spes" and J. Hudson Taylor. believe in holding on as long as we can, not deserting our missionary homes \d schools, until we are compelled to do But I think we need to guard against allowing our desire for the martyr's crown to make away with our common sense, I have great respect for the. Christianity of the missionaries in China, and believe that fow of them, if brought to the test, would deny the Saviour who bought then," There is, however, a great difference between dying " martyr to some great principle, and giting one's self up to Chinese mob, which like other mobs, does not stop to reason about principles great or small. This latter kind of martyrdom may furnish good terial for missionary addresses at home, to inflame her ie sentimentality, but as to being any help toward the evangelization of China, I don't see where it comes A martyr is in China, is the iving witness, not the dead on When we. have the example of the chief of missionaries, the Apvstle Paul, in fleeing from danger, when his life was threatened, and even of our Lord himself, we ought wot to reproach ourselves for want of faith, if we make the best use we can of our legs, knowing that She who fights and runs away, may live to tight another day." lam, ete.,
