FOOCHOW NOTES

(From the Foochow Echo of 19th September.)

The uew Government dock at the Pagoda Anchorage for the use of Chinese men-of-war is now actively at work, some three hundred men being employed on it daily under the supervision of a confidential man of the Viceroy.

Accounts reach us of serious disturbances at a town between Lunghwa and Chi chew, not in any way connected with foreigners, however, we are happy to say, as they are purely salt riots, It appears that the officer appointed to collect salt taxes in that district has been squeezing, or trying to squeeze, by the endeavour to enforce a tax of 26 cash per catty instead of 13cash, and the people would not stan it. Ina general rising that took place the tax collector and magistrate were killed and a body of soldiers put to flight. Hing-hwa is in the Chincheu circui Simultaneously with the above news we receive reports of tigers roaming about the same district. Several men have been Tiger King who we hear intends paying illed and eaten, it is said. The Amoy

Foochow a visit should come up overland and have some sport on the way.

The present Salt Commissioner, whom we mentioned some time ago as the new Provincial Judge elect, spoken of in the city as a second Chang Yao as far as regards honesty of purpose and high principle. On entering on the duties connected with his present commissionership he promptly put s stop to all the corrupt practices previously existing in his yamen, the result that the Imperial revenue from this source has increased very considerably, notwithstanding that the actual receipts are no larger than they were. Rapid advancement for such a man may safely be predicted.
