The First Cabinet Council

after the Autumn recess was held on Friday—and it is hinted that at that meeting a very important decision was come to on the question of Cyprus—a decision at which the ''inner circle " of the Cabinet had already arrived. In effect the Government have, it is stated, resolved to adopt the advice of Sir William Harcourt and relinquish Cyprus, not of course giving it back to Turkey, but it will be granted an autonomy under a guarantee from the Powers. The announcement was first: given to the world by "The Linkman" of Truth, who communicated the important fact to his "dear Lady Betty." Nobody sup "The Linkman," however reliable his society gossip, was in the secrets of Cabinet Ministers, and the jouncement therefore created but little attention at first.
