THE SEASON

opens with the Chinese New Year, and continues until the 18th of the 4th moon. Besides the mountain, with its temples, groves, beautiful streams and lovely views, there are a namber of interesting temples in and about T'aian, In one of these stands shrine twelve or fifteen fect square which is built entirely of brass even to the roof, the only exception being the sides, which have upright doors made of wood. Tu this same temple stand several bronze images of colossal size which are in pleasing contrast to the wretched clay images so commonly found in temples.

ANOTHER FANONS TEMPLE, which antedates the present city of Taian, is inside the city walls. It covers a good portion of the space enclosed within the city, has a separate wall of its own, almost as high as an ordinary city wall, and is an umbrageous enclosure containing many old cypress trees, some of which are said to date back to the time of Christ.
