A German Visit

Recently the place was visited by the German flag-ship and a cruiser. We understand that the Admiral and a few officers called at the Japanese headquarters, and the Japanese returned the visit. In' spite of the exceptionally hot weather some of the officers also visited and inspected the ruins of the forts. Germans, we presume, are specially interested in the forts as they were planned by, and built under the superintendence of a German—Han ¢ajén, as the Chinese call him. The two ships were in the harbour from the evening of the 2ist till the morning of the 24th inst. We wondered that they were here just then, but concluded that they had no interest in the Diamond Jubilee celebration either at Chefoo, Shanghai, or elsewhere.

25th June.
