THE CELEBRATION

The proceedings commenced st 8 am. with areviow of the troops by the General in command. At noon a Royal salute of one hundred and one guns was fired. At 1 p.m, there was horse-racing. Quite a number of the ordinary military horses, I understand, took part; a number of prizes of small value being given to the winners. From one who was present at the time I hear that betting was conspicuous by its absence—I think it is not allowed on such occasions. Later on there was wrestling and skirt-dancing. Both amuse-meats seemed to be vastly enjoyed by the crowd of on-lookers: among whom were the General and his staff and a number of visitors. The former distributed the numerous prizes.
