(eno OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) A PLEASANT EVENING

Tend you a programme of the enter: ment which took place at the Assembly Rooms, on the 23rd. It is the custom, when giving an account of amateur performances not to be invidious, and it would be difficult to say in what particular greater excellence was shown last evening. In the Nigger Minstrel Troupe, Massa Johnson, Tambo, and Bones were prominent and very clever, but they were ably supported by the junior members, some of whom sang very nicely. The local conundrums were much appreciated, but I will not Dare you with s repetition of them as you would not understand them, The character song McCarty's Mare" was capital, and was deservedly encored. As for the stump speech by Mr. Philips on Woman's Rights" it was almost lost in the get-up" of the lecturer, for, without mentioning the other portions of the costume, every one of which was a work of art, it must be owned that the bonnet, (or was it a hat?) was a chef-d'euvre. The interval was really a necessity for the audience to recover from the laughter that rippled over, and full justice was done to the tea and coffee, so bountifally supplied by Mrs, Lorenzen. Fully determined to take things coolly we were suddenly confronted by Blondin's Donkey, who soon kicked all the stoicism out of us. For another hour we were fairly launched on sea of merrie ment, whose waves were kept somewhat under control, by the very clever acting of "Old Grimes" and Handy Andy in the last part of the entertainment, We think " The Troublesome Servant" was the bonne bouche of the amusement pr—probably not because it was really the "*tit-bit"" but om account of there not being anything more. I forgot, however, the place aus: dames and must' add that great credit is due to the young lady, who ided at the piano during the ing and without whose assistance it would have been difficult to do full justice to the treat provided for the community.
