CONGRESS IN SANSI

At last, Congress is in Session, and the President's Message has been r read in both Houses of Cor all the much-feared calamities may be removed at once by the single wave of the anagic legislator's wand. The President has commended hitaself to the whole world for his determination to place the country in a right attitude to other countries on the financial question. The people of the United States," he says, "are entitled to sound and stable currency and to money recognised as stich on every exchange and in every market of the world. This government has no right to injure them by financial experiments opposed to the policy and practice of other civilised states, nor is it justified in permitting an exaggerated, and unreasonable reliance on our national strength and ability to jeoparadise the soundness of the people's MASSY SUGGESTED REMEDIES, So far as can be ascertained, the larger umjority in both Houses is in favour of repeal of the Sherman Bill, and of this number the majority is in favour of nnconditiona repeal. There is, as seen from this, plenty of chance for diversity of opinions, schemes and measures. In fuct it is reported that over one hundred legislators have bills of their own to propose as remedy for the financial distress. A New York politician has studied up the whole question and has been urging his fellow-Democrats to allow him to begin the discussion at once, and let everyone else follow on to his soul's content, but the general sentiment is is in favour Of committing all these bills to the Finance Committee. Great things no doubt will appear aeres the horizon, on which the whole world can gaze in wonder.

The President in his Message also states that next i order must come the tariff revision, when the two parties can wrangle to the full, Thus it is seen that two of the greatest problems of political economy are placed in the hands of the United States Congress to solve, and we only wonder how many of them have really studied this branch of the sciences and understand the bearings thereof on national and international prosperity.
