The Opening of This Port

to steam vessels has been delayed so far, as in other parts, by the exasperating cupidity and stupidity and duplicity of the provincial officials. Probably no native port in the province except Changchou, near Amoy, will have so large a trade, as this one; every terest of the peuple would be conserved by it But because several likin officials fear they will make a little less, the whole population must suffer, from inordinate prices for food and every other commodity. It is time this system of oppression ceased. The only apparent way now seems to be partition. We did not want it to come in that way. But come it must; and if that is the only way the quicker it comes the less trouble and anarchy there will be.
