Under this heading there is very little to record. The British gunboat Rattler left here for Canton on the 25th inst, owing to the report of the riot there. The cruiser Powerful went into dock at Hungham on the 25th, and fits the Admiralty Dock almost though it had been made for her, there hot being, more than, 10 fet to spare in length. The great cruiser's fine proportions were conspicuously visible in dock, and excited much admiration from the numerous visitors. The cruiser Grafton will, I hear, Teave here for Manila on Monday.
'TROOPS FOR WELHAIWET, The P. & O.steamer Ceylon, which arrived here from England on the 26th inst., had on boned a draft of 140 Royal Marines, intended to form part of the garrison of Weilaiwei. They will, be disembarked at your port, and go on by another steamer to their destination. This is not a very large force. Apparently the War Office contemplates raising a regiment of native troops for the purpose. If they do, it will, I fear, prove bad economy in the long run.
