We wish to call the attention readers to the Christian Endeavour C vention to he held xt Foochow early in April. Ivis altogether likely that there are in Shanghai but' few people who understand the significance of such a yatheri in China. The Christian Endeavour movement ix still very young but it has had a most. remarkable growth in numbers and power for doing good. 'The first. society was organised in the United States in 1889, nnd in 1899 there wers 3,400,000 youns people, representing almost' all Protestant denominations, all working together with the distinct purpose of advancing Cheint's Kingdom. The secret of the wonderful vitality of the movement is to be found largely in that it enlists the life and energy of Christian young people in advancing the work of the Church. Tt trains up Christian people who know that Christianity now-n-days means doing something positive for the cause of Christ. isthe influence that is fast bringing the various denominations to " realisation ut the essential unity of their objects. Those who are acquainted with the work of the Society will not question that it is the most vital part of the Christian Church in the United States and Canada, Tr has also gained a firm fouting in Grext Britain, One of the distinguishing Features of the Christian Endewor ly is its annual Conventions. There are County, State, and National conventions, all of which have for their object the ing together for the youd of the general society the collected experience of ull united societies, A National Convention in Americ firings together delegates from every corer st the United States and Canada, and is one of the strongest forces in welding the people together in political as well as religious unity.
The coming Convention in Fonchow hopes to do for the Chinese Christian Church what a home convention would do for the home church. Dr. Francis E. Clark, who will he the principal ins of the Convention, is '© The Father of Christian Endeavonr," having founded the original society in the State of Maine, U.S. A. He is known throughout his own country Father Clark." He is now holding National Convention in Japan, and from China will go to England to attend the international Convention to he held next summer in London, We in Shanghai are more or less cut off from that spirit of altruism which in spite of occasional apperrances is characteristic of the age in out home-lands, and we should nat neglect the opportunity soon to he ours of meeting the leader of probably the strongest oreanization which has for its object the nurture of this split.
