Some food for talk has been furnished the man in the street lately by an unusual event—a highway robbery in the Colony. On Saturday, 2ist ult., three men from Yangt'ing, 35 li from here, brought with them to the market in the city is, 300 in silver to be changed into coin. y ey began their return journey early on Sunday morning, and had gone as far almost. ax Mangtao, a distance of 20 li, when they were waylaid and relieved of their money by a band of robbers, in number about ten. According to first reports, the thieves were deserters from the regiment, dressed in Khaki and armed. On_ enquiry this appears to be incorrect. If deserters, they wore no uniforms, and as regards weapons, it is only known for certain that they had one revolver between them. They, however, succeeded in their object and cleared with the whole of their booty. The tracing of a crime to its source, and the general administration "of justice is greatly hampered here by the difficulty of getting evidence, owing to the extreme reluctance people have to come forward as witnesses.
Tt is, of course, altogether out of the question for authorities in British territory to adopt methods in vogue on the other side of the boundary, only a few miles away, and to extort, evidence under torture, 4th October.
