ELEPHANTS ON THE RAMPAGE

There was an extraordinary scene at the Crystal Palace last Saturday, when Chit and Archie, two elephants attached to Lord Georye Singer's. circus, ran ainu throwzh the phe, one of them, Archie, trampling through the concert room, burs ing into the grill room, and then bronking down a brick wall and tramping about the country for a day or two before he was recap tured. Meanwhile Charlie had been shot ded for he had killed a man, an employe of the circus, and it was not the first man he had killed in the course of his career. There is, however, a good deal of sympathy felt for Charlie, for it was proved at the inquest that the victim had courted hiv fute by his brutality and folly. malicious spirit, prodded C lance, when the animal burst. his chain, seized his tormentor in his trunk, dashed him to the ground, and trampled out what life was loft in him. Archie's escapade attributed to fright at the incident, and he has been taken lack and forgiven. Both elephants are known to the Queen, who ix fond of circus entertainments, and has made anxious enquiries about them.

THE GROSVENOR ESTATES, 'To the surprise of most people the whole estate of the Into Duke of Westminster has been entered ut less than £600,000. Tt is said that when Sir William' Hareourt's Death Duties Act was passed the Duke expressed the opinion that the Grosvenor estates woul probably he assessed at something like £14,000,000; and seeing that the London estates embrace enormous tracts in the West End everybody imagined that the total would he +nermous. Tt seems, however, that the value of the late Duke's life interest. is a very different thing from the total value of the estate and the Chancellor of the Exchequer will not benefit nearly so largely us he will, for instance, in the case of Sir Henry Tate, whose estate has this week been sworn at about a million and a quarter. Last year two partners in Bass's Brewery died and their estates together amounted 000,000 would seem either that landed estates manage to got off much more lightly in regard to probate than personal estate, or that a prosperous brewery is a far botter source of revenue than the very largest and richest landed estate in the country.
