Post Office Motor Cars

The Victoria Postal Department have been experimenting lately with the automobile, for clearing far-distant suburban pillar boxes. The Thomson motor car is the pattern used, with—so far—highly successful results. A recent performance was a Tun of about thirty miles, which, including stoppages necessary for clearing some forty pillar boxes, occupied only one hour and forty-five minutes. This is about half the time usually taken by the horse and van process. This record time permits of a further reduction, as the trial took place by day; whereas the cars, if adopted by the Post Office, will be used at night, and be able to attain greater speeds on the then-deserted roads. But wee betide the homeward bounder who falls foul of them in their wild career.
