Aquatic Sports

The ©. I. M Boy's School Swimming Sports were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, 18th September. The arrangements were excellent, and everything passed off without a hitch in magnificent weather and a calm sea. For the first time the Sports tuck plice at the Chinese Jetty below the Forts—an ideal spot for the purpose. From seats on the jetty the spectators, parents and friends of the boys, watched the proceedings with great interest. The tide being almost at the full the speed contests were swum out in a line parallel vith the jetty, while the graceful swimming was entirely conducted close alongside, exciting an unusual degree of interest and pleasure. In the clear depths of the absolutely still water every motion of the swimmers was distinctly seen in the various exhibitions of side, breast and back strokes. Each peculiarity of stroke, and the slightest fault were manifest at once; while, on the other hand, the ease and grace of movement displayed by some of the young competitors, were the subject fof warm commendation on the part of the assembled spectators. As many afterwards remarked it was a most practical object lesson in the art of swimming, both how, and how riot to do it. "With the aid of the canvas of an old tent a dressing-room had been extemporised at the end of the jetty, and fr-m this with the announcement' of each fresh race, there issued a stream of boys, exch in high spirits and a picturesque red binnket, Without going too much into detail it may be remarked that some of the high dives (about 10 or 12 feet) of Parry I, Taylor, and Clarke were specially good, with those of Robinson Minor, amongst the Juniors; while Conner and Parry came out above their Seniors in the long plunge. Scott's graceful swimming was much admired. Robinson Major was easily firist in the 100 yards race.

The coveted Challenge Cup, presented a number of years ago by a gentleman in Shanghai, fell this year to Howard B. taylor. The announcement, made by Mr. Murray during afternoon tea, which was served on the Beach after the sports, was received with applause.
