A Striking Contrast

The feasting is getting to he quite the fad among the foreign and Chinese Ministers, It is a striking contrast to past days, not merely in the willingness to entortain but still more in doing, the entertaining at private residences. Probably the change is largely due to the open-mindedness of the Empress Dowager in the same direction.

The Empress Dowager and the Foreign Ladies.

There is not a growing erav' ever, to the receptions in. the palace which are given to the foreign ladies by the Empress Dowager.

The money she gave to th children the last time was returned, as it seemed not quite fitting, especially when tne Doyen had previously informed the Foreign Office that no more presents would he received. The Empress Dowager. however, quietly handed two or three of the ladies pieces 5 of jade resting behind her bed. She also. to show bow friendly she was becoming, had the sleeping apartments and reli downy pillow. after which two or three of The ladies tried how nice it was. But we wonder whether it was a nice thing to do. though we confess to ignorance of feminine proprieties with their Majesties. Neither has. the Emperor risen in estimation, as ho is said to have cast exes at one of the pretty ladies at the first reception. From a Chinese standpoint.se mperor's pro-sence is not required at a reception to the In after the first formal and ceremonial bowing. There is certainly a r,, even with the highest. to regard rather than respect as a mark of The University Ground and Buildings.

The Chancellor of the U met. considerable opposis.on compel the sale of property adjoins: present site. Hence it is decided to use the present. build Manchu lads, whil have new grounds the city. This will mean in lose hands a vast expense and much delay. In the end, a grand site with suitable buildings would he most desirable, ott any one who knows anything of China will agree that money will be thought of more than learn ing.
