The disappoint-ut given by the second concert of this Soviety after the success achieved in the opening one evidently put the Commit ce on their mettle. and the third, given at the Lyceum on Wednesday evening, was a triumph ant success. The Theatre was crowded with a brilliant audience, inclu ing the cream of the German evlony and a Inrge number of other music-lovers of all" nationali Success was certain as_soou as it was certained that the services of the very fine band of the German flagship First Bismarck were obtainable. the only criticism possible on their performance is that the strings in some passages were not quite strong enough for the wind; but of! wise their rendering of the Overture to "Mignon," of the two string quartettes by Gillet' and Roche, and of the excerpt from "Lohengrin," was unexceptionable as was their share in the Mendelssohn Con-cerro, and the Normannenzug" chorus. The quartettes were encored, and Reinecke's overture to "King Manfred" was given. The most b illiant number, which called for h the loudest and most continuous applause, was Mrs. Gessner's rendering on the piano of Mendelssohn's Concerto in minor. She played it without book with perfect touch and execution and conception of the composer'sintention, She was twice recalled, and gave as an encore a delightful little study by Grieg, *¢ 4n dem Fruhling." The vocalists were Mrs. Grebin, whose fine mezzo-soprano voice displayed itself well in Grieg's "Ich hehe Dich," and wag still more charming in F. Schubert's "Wohin?" and another bright song which she gave in re-ponse to an und ni-able demand; and Mr. Stepharius, who delighted his'avdience as he always does with songs by Brahms and Rubinstein and an encore song, and who also -ang the solo of the Normannenzug," witha chorus of fifty men from the German garrison here, whose comrades crowded the gallery of the Theatre. The Deutscher Konzert-Verein must be heartily congratulated on their effort, and their reappearance next winter will be looked forward to with eagerness.
