THE ST. PATRICK'S SOCIETY

THE ANNUAL DINNER

The members of St. Patrick's Society celebrated St. Patrick's vay on Monday by a dinner at the Shanghai Club, to which over ninety members and guests sat down. The Chair was occupied by the President, and the Vice-Chairs were taken by Mr, J. O. P. Bland, the Vice-Presfent, Mr. J. W. Harding, and the Rev. w. G. Walshe. The room had been most ettectively decorated with Trish mottoes and eriblems, both national and provincial, whilst a' representation of the Saint driving out the celebrated snakes had a place of honour at one end of the room. Behind the Chair the Irish quarter of the Royal Standard hung on the wall, and within reach of tne Chairman and his supporters shililalaghs were suspended from the ceiling. The menu card was a neat one and bore the following verso composed for the occasion by the Rev. W. G. Walshe:

Oh say not that tis all in vain Wherever Erin's sons reside Their Patzon Saint's day once again They celebrate with joy and pride. For if no other cause for praise Be found in these sad Lenten days, One blessing to the Saint we trace, That we obtain this breathing space 5 And free from fear of sinful taint The Kind reprieve St. Patrick sent Enjoy his gift, without restraint.
