which are so common just now in China have broken out here. hereditary slave of a powerful Lolo chieftain whose lands are about forty miles from here quarrelled with his master and joined the Toman Catholics. The slave was the tenant of one of the chieftain's tars and had for years fallen short in rent payments. Things reached a climax when the chieftain seized the slave and barbarously beat him. One story is that he gouged out the eyes of the offender. This may be an exaggeration.
