INTER-COMPANY CHALLENGE SHIELD

Owing to the issue of ammunition for Range purposes having been discontinued during the greater part of last year, "A" Company have been in undisputed possession of this Shield since February, 1900, until Sunday 6th instant when the Light Horse, who were next in order on the list of challengers, put in_ateam of eight men and selected 200 "ud 500 yards at which to test the prowess of the holders.

The Light Horse fired with the MIN. carbine and "A" Company with the L.M, rifle on equal terms. The former chose the sitting position at the shorter range while the latter fired from the knee. It may here be mentioned that the mounds being made t" slope backwards are unsuited to the sitting position, and it is a matter for consideration whether they should not be altered.

The weather was cold, with a steady wind, and the light was without variation throughout, clear but not bright. At 200 yards the shooting of both teams was of almost equal merit—'* A "Ca, with a lead of 3 points, averaging 8 points less than "inners" but at 500 yards some of the challengers went to pieces and allowed the holders to romp home 49 points ahead, The following are the scores of the respective team:
