(mow ove ows connEsroxvEsT,) has again been very quiet, and there ix ws of interest ti" chronicle. i Tam glad to say, shows signs of decreasing, though it is hard ly safe to accept the official returns as any guide, partly because nothing like all the cases are reported and partly from. the fact that the population has been greatly reduced by the constant exodus of the Chinese to the mainland, and notably to Canton. 'The total cases' reported so far number 1,406 cases and 1,334 deaths. the face of it this is absolute nonsense. Taking the lowest estimate, from caleulations made on the basis of cases known in two or three industrial enterprises, the cases must be much nearer seven thousand to date. But the epidemic has, I think, seen its worst point, and is now abating. Nevertheless it is becoming an annual terror, and should be met in advance next season with wuch precautions as will minimise its ravages and shorten its stay. No further cases among Europeans have tv be recorded, except one Portuguese, who died yesterday, and there were only 19 new cases during the past twenty-four hours.
