The Peking Anniversary

CONGRATULATORY TELEGRAMS

Wednesday, the Lith of August, was the first anniversary of that memorable day when the International Relief Force won an entry into besieged Peking, and liberated the foreigners who had defended themselves there so long and so gallantly. 'The occasion did not pass entirely without notice in Shanghai. First and foremost the Customs' staff here forwarded a telegram of congratulation to the Tnspector-General, Sir Robert Hart, to which he replied. Second, those members of the Customs' service' who came through the siege received a round-robin from their comrades, the terms of which were similar.

Last night, too, at the Shanghai Club a few—a very few—gentlemen sat down, to a special dinner. 'The party consisted of those who either' had been relieved or were among the relievers a year ago. This little gathering sent a telegram to Dr. Morrison, "The Times" correspondent, by whom it was to be shown to comrades in Peking.
