Fair progress is being made with the scheme for raising a St. Andrew's Company for the Shang-bai Volunteer Corps. Twenty-six names have been received so far, of whom four belong to the Reserve Ca., while the rest do not at present belong to any unit. But far more than these must come forward.
Naturally the promoters of the Company do not want men who ars already doing their duty to the Settlement as members of active companies. The men whom it is sought to enroll are those who, living in Shanghai, do not appear to realize how vital it is that they should be ready to do their share if their lives and those of wives and families are in danger. It is impossible to deal with and use unorganized and untrained men when emergencies do arise; and every eligible Scoteman should think carefully whether, in any emergency, he would be of use to his fellow residents. This has become; of special importance now that s0 many men are leaving to take their abore in defending the Empire.
